Description
Atari Games was an American arcade giant born in 1984 after Warner split the original Atari. While the home console branch struggled, Atari Games flourished by creating legendary, innovative arcade cabinets. They pioneered cooperative four-player gaming with Gauntlet and introduced revolutionary 3D polygon graphics in Hard Drivin'. Other massive hits included Marble Madness, Paperboy, and the stop-motion fighting game Primal Rage. To bypass Nintendo’s strict licensing and release home ports, they famously operated under the subsidiary name Tengen. Their distinctive 1980s cabinet designs and corporate aesthetic directly inspired Disney's fictional "Tobikomi" brand in Wreck-It Ralph. The company went through several owners over the years, including Namco and Midway Games. Renamed Midway Games West, the studio eventually shut down in 2003, ending nearly two decades of arcade history. Today, most of their historic IP portfolio and arcade library belongs to Warner Bros. Games.
