David Livingstone, famoso misionero y explorador inglés, marchó en 1841 a África con una misión sanitaria, trabajando durante varios años en Bechualandia.

Tras su regreso a Inglaterra en 1866 vuelve a África para aclarar las relaciones entre las cuencas del Zambeze y el Nilo con el deseo de hallar las fuentes de este río.

En 1871 tras varios años sin noticias de Livingstone el diario New York Herald envía a Henry Morton Stanley en su búsqueda. Para lo cual desembarca en Bagamoyo, en la costa oriental de África junto a Zanzibar, desde donde habrá de remontar el río Zambeze hasta el poblado de los Ujiji, donde se supone que debe encontrarlo.

Stanley conocedor del África sabe que va a enfrentarse con múltiples peligros (animales salvajes, innumerables obstáculos naturales, tribus antropófagas), y ha de atravesar el templo sagrado de los Ujiji al que habrá de llevar las cinco piedras sagradas de la tribu por lo que en su equipaje ha incluido un machete, un bumerán, granadas y su inseparable pértiga.
